Project 5: 3D Photography May 11, 2010

With the growing popularity of 3D films we will examine the mechanics of Red Blue 3D imagery, or the “old school” 3D.

This project will involve several different skills you have learned in class and you will also develops some new skills with Photoshop and photography.

The first stage in the project is to create your own red and blue 3D glasses.  You can use a template to help design your glasses but don’t let that stop you from designing your own pair of magic glasses.  The key point about your glasses is the red must be over the left eye and blue over the right eye.  Read more about the science of how it works here.

After you create your own 3D glasses you can see how they work and see which types of images work better than others for 3D photography.  Check out the Anaglyph (Red Cyan 3D Pictures) Pool on Flickr.

After viewing some 3D images you will create your own photograph that is shot from a stereoscopic vantage point.  Essentially you will shoot the same image but move the camera to the side about 2.5 inches.  You will use your images and follow one of several different tutorials found on the web.  Use some of the 3D tutorials below for guidance or search for your own tutorial.  If you find a great tutorial worth sharing on this subject post it below.
