The next assignment will show you how you can use typeface to create logos. You will be using Adobe Illustrator and learn to use the Type tool and also the Pathfinder.
I found a really interesting Website that Katrina tagged with her delicious account. Check out the page here to get an idea of where we will be going with this project.
You will create some words that help to illustrate some sort of meaning of the word. Which words will you illustrate? Post a comment to this page and offer your suggestions. I will gather your suggestions and post a list of six words that you will illustrate.
In keeping with the Graphic Design Approach to our projects you will follow the steps listed below:
Research the Competition: Look at the Logo Pond for a variety of logo ideas or Logo Lounge for thoughts on the latest logo trends. These are great sites that allow you to generate some ideas.
Explore some valuable information other places on the web to help you with this project:
A little information about communicating with Typography.
You may include some Gestalt Principles in your designs.
Check out this page from Vectortuts.com on using the Pathfinder Part 1
Another page on using the Type Tool.
You will illustrate six words: splash, bacon, and spring are required, then choose three of your own words.
Brainstorm: Begin to make lists of words that you will illustrate, jot down all ideas (both good and bad) for that word. Use brainstorm bubbles, write lists, get all your thoughts down on paper. This step is required to earn an A.
Thumbnail Sketch: After you have developed some ideas you will make thumbnail sketches to turn your ideas into images. These are small sketches that are not super detailed. They are designed to help you think visually instead of verbally. Your thumbnail sketches need to be drawn before you begin your computer work. This step is required to earn an A.
Rough Drawing: Create some larger drawings of your thumbnails. These will allow you to work out the details of your idea. Maybe you will even generate some better ideas at this stage too.
Final Composition: After you work your ideas out in your sketchbook you are then ready to begin creating your design on the computer.
Project Specifications:
You will layout your six designs on a letter size piece of paper (8.5×11) You can choose how you want to layout your words but this will also be part of your design.
